Combining Classification and Nonmonotonic Inheritance Reasoning: A First Step

چکیده
The formal analysis of semantic networks and frame systems led to the development of nonmonotonic inheritance networks and termi-nological logics. While nonmonotonic inheritance networks formalize the notion of default inheritance of typical properties, terminological logics formalize the notion of deening concepts and reasoning about deenitions. Although it seems to be desirable to (re-)unify the two 1 approaches, such an attempt has not been made until now. In this paper, we will make a rst step into this direction by specifying a nonmonotonic extension of a simple terminological logic.

A Clash of Intuitions: The Current State of Nonmonotonic Multiple Inheritance Systems
Early attempts at combining multiple inheritance with nonmonotonic reasoning were based on straight forward extensions of tree-structured inheritance systems, and were theoretically unsound. In The Mathematics of Inheritance Systems, or TMOIS, Touretzky described two problems these systems cannot handle: reasoning in the presence of true but redundant assertions, and coping with ambiguity. TMOI...
متن کاملArtificial nonmonotonic neural networks
In this paper, we introduce Artificial Nonmonotonic Neural Networks (ANNNs), a kind of hybrid learning systems that are capable of nonmonotonic reasoning. Nonmonotonic reasoning plays an important role in the development of artificial intelligent systems that try to mimic common sense reasoning, as exhibited by humans. On the other hand, a hybrid learning system provides an explanation capabili...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Inheritance, Argumentation and Logic Programming
We study the conceptual relationship between the semantics of nonmonotonic inheritance reasoning and argumentation. We show that the credulous semantics of nonmonotonic inheritance network can be captured by the stable semantics of argumentation. We present a transformation of nonmonotonic inheritance networks into equivalent extended logic programs.
متن کاملThe Complexity of Circumscription in Description Logic
As fragments of first-order logic, Description logics (DLs) do not provide nonmonotonic features such as defeasible inheritance and default rules. Since many applications would benefit from the availability of such features, several families of nonmonotonic DLs have been developed that are mostly based on default logic and autoepistemic logic. In this paper, we consider circumscription as an in...
متن کاملInheritance Comes of Age : Applying Nonmonotonic
Nonmonotonic reasoning is virtually absent from industry and has been so since its inception ; the result is that the eld is becoming marginalized within AI. I argue that this is because researchers in the area focus exclusively on commonsense problems which are irrelevant to industry and because few eecient algorithms and/or tools have been developed. A sensible strategy is thus to focus on in...
